Lights! Camera! Action! Los Angeles or the City of Angels is well known for its celebrity residents, its top status in the entertainment industry and its smog, but there is so much more that goes into this West Coast metropolis.
It started as a small mission in the southern California territory, a pueblo of no major consequence, until the Gold Rush of the late 1840's. Soon afterward it became a major city in the new state of California. During the early 20th century it was a major supplier in petroleum, then steadily became an important city for entertainment, aviation and technology. Among other places, it is the home of the La Brea Tar Pits, Japanese American National Museum, the Museum of Tolerance, the Hollywood Bowl, the Disney Concert Hall, the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
Perhaps one of the most famous landmarks in Los Angeles is the Hollywood sign, located on the southern side of Mount Lee in Griffith Park. It captures the essence of "Tinseltown" and is one of the most well known public displays in the world. In keeping with the ambiance of the star-studded L.A., the Mann's Chinese Theater is another motion picture landmark. The structure remniscent of a Chinese pagoda is the famous site of the celebrity imprinted sidewalk that lies in its forecourt. Hollywood Boulevard is the home of the famous "Hollywood Walk of Fame" as well as numerous nightclubs, shopping, and the Kodak Theatre.
To see stars of another nature, the Griffith Observatory sits atop Mount Hollywood in Griffith Park. It features three solar telescopes, a planetarium, a Zeiss refracting telescope, and the Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon presentation theater.
Located in nearby Anaheim is the West Coast's Happiest Place on Earth - Disneyland. There visitors can find Downtown Disney, California Adventure, Main Street, U.S.A., ToonTown, Frontierland, Fantasyland, Adventureland, Tomorrowland, Critter Country and New Orleans Square. Anaheim is also home to the NHL team, the Ducks.
For those who come to L.A. for people watching, water leisure activities like boating and yachting, and the beach the areas of Redondo Beach and Marina del Rey are close by.
Whether you want to take in some celebrity culture, or hang out by the beach on the Pacific Coast with all the other beautiful people, Los Angeles is the place to be in California.
